National prices, New Hampshire wages, the town's own permit fee

Cost guides publish installed prices as national averages. This calculator keeps the material part of that price, scales the labor part by what the trade earns in your county's Bureau of Labor Statistics wage area, and adds the permit fee from your town's published schedule. Every figure links back to where it came from.

How the numbers are worked out

Installed price. Each material's low and high price per unit comes from a public cost guide that states it (HomeGuide for most projects), quoted word for word on every page. Multiplied by the size you enter, that is the national range.

Labor. The same guides state what part of the price is labor: $1.50–$3 per square foot for roofing, for example. Only that part is scaled, by the ratio of the trade's median hourly wage in your area to the national median (BLS 2025 wage data). New Hampshire HVAC installers earn +21.1% against the US median; roofers +7.9%.

Permit. 24 towns publish a fee schedule this site could read. Where it names the work, the fee is that line; where it sets a general residential rate, the page says so and applies it. Towns without a readable schedule still get the labor-adjusted price through their county.

The methodology lists every source with the date it was checked. Guides: how contractors price a roof, permit fees by town, comparing three quotes.
